Attacks on canals in Venice: Woman declared brain dead after brutal assault

VENICE, LOS ANGELES (KABC) – One of two women brutally attacked and sexually assaulted in the canal area of Venice last month has been declared brain dead.

The two separate attacks were allegedly carried out by the same man on the night of April 6th. Anthony Francisco Jones, 29, was arrested days later in San Diego, where he had allegedly fled.

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Jones was charged April 15 with two counts of forcible rape and one count each of sexual penetration by force, assault, torture, attempted murder and sodomy by force.

A statement released Tuesday by District Attorney George Gascón’s office said it was aware of the circumstances surrounding the victim’s condition.

“During this unimaginably difficult time, our hearts and deepest condolences go out to the victim’s family and friends,” said Gascón’s chief of staff, Tiffiny Blacknell. “Our office is considering how we will proceed to ensure that the defendant is held fully accountable for his conduct.”

LA City Councilwoman Traci Park also released a statement saying:

“I am devastated to receive this news regarding the victim of the horrific attack on the Venice canals. My prayers are with her family in this moment of loss and I want to express my condolences on behalf of the entire Venice and Westside communities. While there is no way we can change anything in the face of this terrible tragedy, I hope the family can take comfort in knowing that the perpetrator of this crime has been arrested and justice will be served.”
