Police release information about 4 dead and 1 injured in wrong-way driver accident in Oakland County

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Police have released numerous additional information about the four people killed and injured in a wrong-way driving crash in Oakland County.

The accident occurred around 2:50 a.m. on Sunday, July 28, 2024, in the southbound lanes of I-75 near 11 Mile Road in Royal Oak.

According to authorities, a 29-year-old Oak Park man was driving a black Volkswagen northbound in the southbound lanes when he collided with a Dodge Caravan.

When Royal Oak officers arrived, they found the Volkswagen on fire. They closed the highway and had both cars exit to begin their investigation.

The driver of the Volkswagen was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

There were four people in the trailer. A 34-year-old man from Troy, a 54-year-old Mexican man and a 71-year-old Mexican man were pronounced dead at the scene.

A 31-year-old woman from Troy was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive.

The police closed the highway for six hours.

Officials are awaiting toxicology results following an initial medical examination.

Michigan State Police are still investigating the accident, including where and when the at-fault driver entered the southbound lane.
