Telangana teacher suspended for cutting students’ hair

Hyderabad:

A teacher at a government school in Khammam district of Telangana state cut the hair of 15 male students because she thought their hair was too long. The woman was then suspended from class.

The incident occurred in Kalluru mandal of the district on Saturday and the English teacher has been suspended pending investigation, education department officials said on Sunday.

It was said that the teacher trimmed the hair of almost 15 students from grades 8, 9 and 10 with scissors on school premises.

The students who were upset about the haircut complained to their parents, who in turn protested against the teacher’s action in front of the school.

“It (resorting to haircut) is not the teacher’s job. If they (the students) are irregular and undisciplined, they could have informed their parents and should not have done so (cutting students’ hair),” the official said.

The teacher, for her part, said that the students had been advised several times to get their hair cut because they had attended classes with long hair.

“Since the students did not do this, she had to cut their hair,” the teacher told the media, adding that she did not think this was wrong. However, she said some students had “objected” to having their hair cut.
