Broken Arrow officer fired after investigation into illegal parking

Broken Arrow police have fired one of the officers involved in a parking violation arrest on May 29.

According to BAPD, Sergeant Michael Ferguson was fired Tuesday following an internal investigation into Richard McMahon’s arrest. Broken Arrow police released bodycam video on June 5 that shows Ferguson and other officers confronting McMahon or parking illegally in his cul-de-sac.

During the altercation, McMahon is seen slamming the door in officers’ faces as they attempt to speak to him. Ferguson and the other officers then enter McMahon’s home and begin the arrest.

“Hey, I’m investigating a traffic violation and you have no right to do that,” Ferguson can be seen saying on the video.

The internal investigation was conducted and the results were forwarded to the City Manager’s office for review. In a statement Tuesday, Broken Arrow Police said they always strive to be open and transparent with our community.

McMahon told News On 6 on Wednesday he could not give an interview until he spoke with his attorney.

Broken Arrow police say McMahon called police first because someone else was parking illegally, but officers say McMahon was the one who parked his car sideways on the dead-end street and wouldn’t let anyone pass. The officer says on the video they were called to McMahon’s house multiple times because he called police on his neighbors.

“I hate that guy,” Ferguson can be heard saying in the video. “I hate Richard McMahon. I don’t care.”
