Man who was shot by VB police had previously violently attacked his mother

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The man suspected of one woman stabbed and two others left in critical condition in Virginia Beach over the weekend had a history of violence and mental health problems, court documents show.

Marques Hasbrouck, 22, was shot and killed by VBPD officers who were called to a home in the 4100 block of White Beam Court for a reported stabbing. Police say Hasbrouck attacked them with a crowbar and metal bar in his hand. He did not respond to the taser.

A neighbor 10 On Your Side spoke to on Monday confirmed that Marques Hasbrouck did not comply with the officer’s orders.

“The next thing I remember is hearing them screaming, ‘Drop it, drop it, drop it,'” the man told 10 On Your Side. “He didn’t drop it; he charged at them. He chased them down the driveway. They were backing toward my house (when Marques was shot).”

Court documents show that Victoria Hasbrouck was the adoptive mother of Marques Hasbrouck.

On November 19, 2017, Marques Hasbrouck was arrested and charged with stabbing Victoria in the face, head and body with scissors.

The incident followed an argument over Marques Hasbrouck playing video games and not taking his medication. An affidavit describes him cursing at her and shoving her.

“Marques wanted to bring fast food to the table, but his mother told him he couldn’t have it because of the way he talked to her,” it says. “Marques grabbed a pair of scissors and attacked his mother.”

Victoria Hasbrouck was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“(Marques) stated that he had ‘murderous intent’ and that he specifically aimed for her eyes because ‘they are soft,'” the document continues. “As he attacked, the voices in his head urged him to do so.”

According to the police account, Marques Hasbrouck cooperated with the police and turned himself in at the end of the incident.

The charges were dropped in January 2019 after a court found that Marques Hasbrouck had fully complied with the terms of his sentence.
