Carbondale Police Investigate Shooting on South Lewis Lane

One of the suspects was identified in connection with a shooting Saturday afternoon in the 700 block of South Lewis Lane in Carbondale.

The investigation led officers to two people in a vehicle who were involved in a disturbance and allegedly fired a weapon. Officers identified one of the suspects as 36-year-old Manuel Cass of Carbondale. A loaded firearm was found in the two men’s vehicle, and controlled substances were also discovered in Cass’s possession and in the vehicle itself. Officers took both men into custody without incident.

During the course of the investigation, a woman was taken to a local hospital with a gunshot wound. She was treated for her injury and was released from the hospital.

Cass was charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Officials initially did not file charges against the second suspect and released him from custody. As the investigation progresses, other people may be identified as suspects.
