Former Houston Texans first-round pick happy to be back in his natural position

Houston Texans offensive lineman Tytus Howard prefers to line up at right tackle because it is his natural position and he plays best at that position. However, he has only started 36 of his 61 career starts at RT because the Texans have placed him at two different positions along the offensive line during his career. He has started 21 games at LG and four at LT.

We’ll review each of his first five seasons, looking at the positions he played and his performance in each season.

Tytus Howard played left guard and right tackle his rookie season. He started one game at LG and seven at RT in 2019, posting 20 pressures, 16 pressures, two hits, two sacks allowed, five penalties and a 59.4 PFF grade before a knee injury ended his season. He also posted a 70.4 pass-blocking grade and a 51.2 run-blocking grade.

Howard played exclusively as a right tackle in his sophomore season, starting 14 games at the position. He improved from his rookie season, posting 42 pressures, 37 pressures, three hits, two sacks allowed, 11 penalties and a 62.1 PFF grade before a concussion ended his season. He also posted a 65.4 pass-blocking grade and a 62.7 run-blocking grade.

Howard played left guard and left tackle in his third season, starting 11 times at left tackle and four times at left tackle. While he played well at left tackle, his struggles at left tackle dragged down his overall grade. He had 23 pressures, 19 pressures, two hits, two sacks allowed, eight penalties, a 70.1 pass blocking grade, a 42.5 run blocking grade and a 51.4 PFF grade.

Howard played right tackle and left guard in his fourth season, starting 15 times at RT and twice at LG. He had his best season, with 38 pressures, 30 pressures, five hits, three sacks allowed, nine penalties, a 70.2 pass-blocking grade, a 64.5 run-blocking grade and a 67.9 PFF grade.

Howard dealt with two separate injuries in his fifth season. He missed the first four games with a broken hand. He returned in Week 5 and started the next seven games at left guard due to injuries. However, he struggled and posted his worst grade as a pro, with 18 pressures, 14 rushes, three hits, one sack allowed, a 38.9 pass-blocking grade, a 49.6 run-blocking grade and a 46.8 PFF grade before a knee injury ended his season.

Howard spent most of the offseason recovering from his knee injury and missed OTAs and mandatory minicamp. Thanks to their month-long break, he reported to training camp healthy. So far, he’s received first-team reps at RT in their first three practices.

“I play tackle, I’ve played tackle since I moved to the offensive line in 2016,” said Howard, a former rookie pick who has started 61 career games. “So that’s what I do. That’s what I do best. That’s where I showcase my skills, so I can help the team the most. They let me move back to right tackle, and I know I’m going to have a good year and help this team win a lot of games.”

Their interior offensive line, especially at left guard, must stay healthy for Howard to remain at right tackle.
