Senator Martin Heinrich of New Mexico calls on Biden to suspend re-election campaign

SANTA FE, New Mexico (KVIA) – New Mexico Senator Martin Heinrich is calling on President Joe Biden to suspend his re-election campaign.

Heinrich calls Biden an experienced president, but says it would be in the best interest of the country at this point if Biden resigned.

The senator’s office released the following statement from Heinrich to ABC-7. You can read it in full below.

“Joe Biden is one of the most successful presidents in modern history. He has led our nation through unprecedented challenges with unwavering dedication and deep integrity. His years of service have had a lasting impact on the lives of countless Americans.

But this moment in our country’s history requires a focus that is bigger than any one person. The return of Donald Trump to the White House poses an existential threat to our democracy. We must defeat him in November, and we need a candidate who can do it.

While the decision to withdraw from the campaign rests solely with President Biden, I believe it is in the best interest of our country for him to step down. By passing the torch, he would secure his legacy as one of our nation’s greatest leaders and allow us to unite behind a candidate who is best able to defeat Donald Trump and secure the future of our democracy.”
