Rape: Man sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping minor girl in Kandhamal | News from Bhubaneswar

Berhampur: A special Pocso court at Phulbani in Kandhamal district on Tuesday sentenced a 26-year-old man to 20 years of hard labor for repeatedly raping a girl aged around 14. Additional District and Special Judge Rajesh Dash also imposed a fine of Rs 1.10 lakh on the convict. “The convict will have to serve another 13 months in jail if he fails to pay the fine,” said special public prosecutor Asim Praharaj. “The court also directed the district legal authority to pay compensation of Rs 6 lakh to the survivor,” he added. The convict has been released on bail, sources said. According to sources, the girl went to a friend’s house for studies in 2018 when she was in Class 8. The convict is her friend’s brother. Despite her reluctance, he allegedly raped her and her ordeal lasted for around four years. He also threatened her not to disclose the matter to anyone. The girl later narrated the matter to her elder sister when she inquired about her ill health. The survivor’s mother filed a complaint against the convict on November 19, 2022, after her elder sister told her parents.
