Statesboro police officer apparently killed by suicide

A Statesboro Police Department patrol officer was shot and killed early Sunday morning in what police say was an apparent murder-suicide.

At approximately 2:36 a.m. on Easter morning, Statesboro Police officers responded to reports of possible shots fired at Copper Beech Townhomes. Upon arrival, officers encountered APO Ian Huggins suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Shortly after officers entered the home, Huggins’ wife, Rebecca Boyett Huggins, committed suicide by shooting herself in the head. The two had been married less than two months earlier on February 14.

Emergency medical services and officers on scene attempted to resuscitate both Ian Huggins and Rebecca Huggins. Both were transported to East Georgia Regional Medical Center. Life-saving efforts were unsuccessful.

The Statesboro Police Department has turned the investigation over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which will handle all inquiries.

“We would like to thank the GBI and the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office for their help and support during this difficult time for our department,” department officials said in a press release on Facebook.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact the Statesboro Police Department at (912) 764-9911.
