Coast Guard calls off search for man who fell overboard near Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel – The Virginian-Pilot

The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended the search for a man who entered the water near the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel on Thursday.

The search for the man began shortly after 12:30 p.m. Thursday after Coast Guard Sector Virginia watchdogs received a report of a missing swimmer who had last entered the water without a life jacket and wandered away from his pleasure boat off Buckroe Beach in Hampton.

The Coast Guard dispatched a 45-foot rescue boat crew from its station in Portsmouth and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City to search the area. During the search, waves ranged from 12 to 36 inches high and winds reached 10 mph. Rescue crews covered an area of ​​more than 700 square miles, and several regional teams joined the search, including those from Hampton, Norfolk, Poquoson and the Virginia Marine Resources Commission.
