“You’re going to kill me, brother.”

A Buffalo police officer shot and killed a man as he clung to the suspect’s car after it sped off with a 6-year-old child in the front seat during a traffic stop, according to shocking body camera footage.

Officer Ronald Ammerman stopped Dae’von Roberts, 25, shortly after midnight Wednesday for speeding and tinted windows, the Buffalo Police Department said.

Ammerman approached the driver’s side of the car and immediately noticed that a 6-year-old boy – whom the suspect first identified as his “little cousin” and then seconds later as “his nephew” – was sitting in the front seat and not wearing a seat belt.

The officer then asked Roberts to provide identification, which he agreed to.

The suspect, who told the officer he was from Georgia and was driving his sister’s vehicle, showed him an out-of-state ID on his phone and said everything was fine because he got pulled over “every day.”

However, after checking the ID, Ammerman discovered that the photo on the ID was invalid and that Roberts did not have a license “in either state.”

The officer then told Roberts they would do a separate search for his name and showed Ammerman getting into the car and opening the door.

Seconds after the door opened, Roberts hit the gas pedal and sped off, with the officer holding the door frame as if for his life.

“You’re going to kill me, brother,” Ammerman is heard pleading repeatedly as the car accelerates.

The officer pleaded with the suspect to slow down and “get out,” but Robert ignored him,

Roberts continued to drive erratically and appeared to kick Ammerman out of the car as the 6-year-old could be heard crying hysterically.

Ammerman pulled out his gun and fired several shots at Roberts, who ran out of the moving vehicle and onto the officer.

Ammerman held on to the car for about 20 seconds before shooting Roberts, and the two fell into the street.

“Shots were fired! There’s still a child in the car. He tried to kill me,” Ammerman shouted into his radio as he rushed to check on the child.

Upon arriving at the vehicle, the officer immediately comforted the 6-year-old child, who was unharmed.

The body camera of Ammerman’s partner, Officer Jonathan Crawford, was positioned on the passenger side of the suspect’s car, which showed the moment Roberts took off with his partner clinging to the car.

Crawford then got into his car and joined the suspect, who was lying motionless on the ground, before help arrived.

The suspect was then transported by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Buffalo Police Department Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said at a news conference following the fatal shooting Thursday.

Ammerman was also taken to hospital with minor injuries and was later released.

After requesting a search warrant for the car, which did not belong to the suspect, police say they found a loaded 9mm Taurus pistol under the driver’s seat.

“I believe that was a justified use of force that occurred the other night,” Buffalo Police Commissioner Roberts said at the news conference.

“When you consider that the officer was in a very dangerous situation, such as the risk of serious bodily injury or death, the use of that level of force is justified by law, and I believe it is a justified use of force in this case.”

Ammerman, a seven-and-a-half-year veteran of the department, and Crawford were placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy.

“They will need time to digest this,” Gramaglia said.

“It’s real life, there’s not a lot of control over how some of these situations play out. We can train for different situations, but when it happens in real life, when there are real situations, they always play out differently than they do in a training facility.”

Buffalo homicide detectives and the internal affairs division are conducting separate investigations into the fatal shooting.

In April, Roberts was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, first-degree reckless endangerment and third-degree criminal mischief during a memorial service for his 12-year-old half-brother, Jaylen Griffin, according to WIVB.

Roberts was held without bail until the charges were changed to first-degree attempted assault and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon in June and was released on probation.

Griffin’s body was found in a South Buffalo home in April after she went missing in August 2020, WIVB reported.

Roberts even mentioned the boy to the police before the traffic stop escalated.

“It’s a very sad situation in every way. This family has been through a lot in recent years,” Gramaglia said.
