Accident data shows high number of accidents on Westchester Road, where mother and son were hit and killed by school bus

A new report sheds light on the dangers of a stretch of road in Mamaroneck where a 6-year-old boy and his mother were killed last month. It happened at the corner of Mamaroneck Avenue and New Street as the two were walking to school on June 20.

New data from a traffic surveyor shows that there are about 41 accidents annually on Mamaroneck Avenue between Grand Street and Andrews Street. That’s three times the national average. The stretch of road studied is less than half a mile long.

In June, 6-year-old Michael and his mother, Molly Murphy Donovan, were crossing the street when they were struck and killed by a smaller school bus. Police said they were using the crosswalk and there was actually a pedestrian sign. The driver of the school bus had a green light to turn, according to police.

Since that accident, dozens of families in the community have been fighting for improved safety measures on this road, which is under the jurisdiction of Westchester County.

Village and county leaders told News 12 they are looking at both short-term and long-term initiatives to make the streets safer, especially around schools.

But dozens of families say the clock is ticking and want changes made as soon as possible before the start of the next school year.

A meeting between the county and the village is scheduled for July 15 to discuss further action within the framework of a safety plan.
