The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) has imposed a precautionary suspension on the consulting engineer who oversaw the construction of the apartment block in George that collapsed over a month ago, killing 34 people.

In a statement on Tuesday, ECSA said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to prevent potential and/or actual damage to public health and safety from engineering projects.

This came after the report’s recommendations were presented at a council meeting this month.
