Elderly man among 4 dead in Surat apartment, police suspect gas poisoning | Ahmedabad News

Four people, including a married couple, were found dead under mysterious circumstances in a room in Surat on Saturday morning. Police said they found the switch of the gas water heater turned on, adding that the four may have died of suffocation.

What may have made the situation worse, according to police, was the fact that the doors and windows were closed and the air conditioning in the room was on.

Police came to know about the incident on Saturday morning and rushed to the crime scene at Rajhan’s residence in Jehangirpura area of Surat. The bodies of the four persons were found in different directions of the room. No injury marks were found on their bodies. Suicide notes were also not found.

The bodies were later shifted to New Civil Hospital for postmortem. The deceased were identified as Jashuben Keshav Vadher, 58, Shantuben Vadher, 55, Hirabhai Mewada, 60, and his wife Gauriben, 55. Officials from the forensic department also reached the scene and collected samples.

After initial investigation, Jehangirpura police said that Jashuben Vadher lives with her younger son Rakesh Vadher on the 5th floor of Rajhans Residency Apartments while her eldest son Mukesh Vadher lives on the first floor of the same building. Rakesh has gone to Goa with his family for summer vacation and has not returned yet.

Festive offer

Mukesh was given medical treatment and discharged from the hospital. Jashuben’s sisters Shantuben, Gauriben and her husband Hirabhai Mewada visited Mukesh on Friday evening and enquired about his condition.

Jashuben, his two sisters and Hirabhai had dinner at Mukesh’s apartment and since it was late, they went to sleep at Jasuben’s fifth floor house, police said.

When Mukesh’s wife went to Jasuben’s residence on Saturday morning to bring him morning tea and breakfast, no one opened the door despite repeated knocking. When Mukesh came to know about this, he opened the door. He has a spare key to his brother Rakesh’s house.

Mukesh and his wife found all four dead and told police that they could not breathe because of the gas.

Deputy Police Chief of L Division RP Zala said: “We suspect that the gas emitted from the geyser may have filled the room and that everyone died of suffocation as they were in a deep sleep. Once the autopsy is performed at the New Civil Hospital, the cause of death will be determined.”
