Former President Jimmy Carter remains in hospice care, with no significant change in his health since his arrival nearly 16 months ago, according to his grandson, Jason Carter. “God had other plans,” said Jason Carter, reflecting on his grandfather’s surprisingly prolonged survival since starting hospice care in February 2023.

Former president Jimmy Carter remains in palliative care, with no significant change in his health since his arrival nearly 16 months ago, according to his grandson, Jason Carter. Speaking to an audience at the Rosalynn Carter Mental Health Forum in Georgia, Jason also expressed gratitude to the former president’s supporters who were concerned about his health and praying for him.

Jason Carter, the eldest Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter‘s 22 grandchildren recently spoke to Southern Living magazine. He revealed that the 99-year-old former president is “experiencing the world as best he can while continuing this process.”

“God had other plans,” said Jason Carter, reflecting on his grandfather’s surprisingly prolonged survival since beginning hospice care in February 2023. Rosalynn Carter, his wife of 77 years, died in November 2023.

“After 77 years of marriage…I just don’t think any of us really understand what it’s like for him right now,” Jason Carter said. “We have to accept this fact, that there are things about the mind that we simply cannot understand.”

Hospice patients often stay an average of 70 days, but many stay only a few weeks. In light of this, Jimmy Carter’s extended stay in a hospice facility in his Georgia hometown of Plains is notable. Jason Carter told the story of his grandfather’s recent visit. They discussed family issues, the nonprofit Carter Center and watched an Atlanta Braves game.

He also inquired about his grandfather’s well-being. “I told him, I said, ‘Wow, you know, when people ask me how you’re doing, I say ‘honestly, I don’t know,'” Jason recalled. “And he kind of smiled and said, ‘I don’t know.’ It was quite nice,” he added.

Jimmy Carter is still receiving palliative care and his status is currently stable. The circumstances surrounding the former president highlight how unpredictable end-of-life care can be.
