Labour hates King Charles III (according to the Tories’ campaign ad) – POLITICO

The vast majority of these impressions came from people over 55 – the demographic most likely to support the monarchy.

The ads echo comments made by the Labour leader in a 2005 documentary in which he said it was “strange” that he had been appointed to the Queen’s Council – the title given to Britain’s leading lawyers – because he had “frequently proposed the abolition of the monarchy”.

Other ads echoed statements made last year by anti-royal Labour politician Clive Lewis, who is not part of the party’s top team, who claimed that other senior party figures were secretly pro-republican.

Another series of Conservative ads highlighted demands made at a small pro-Republican fringe event at the 2022 Labour Party Conference. These included a call for a referendum on abolishing the monarchy – with the Tories now claiming the demands are symbolic of “what Keir Starmer’s party stands for”.

Meanwhile, the Labour leader has sought to burnish his patriotic reputation as he campaigns for the general election at 10 Downing Street on July 5.

This includes singing the national anthem with party members at the start of the 2022 Labour Party Conference and speaking about his time as head of the Crown Prosecution Service, the chief law enforcement agency for England and Wales.
