38-year-old man flown to hospital by helicopter after alleged incident of aggression while driving in Lehi; suspect arrested

LEHI, Utah, June 3, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) – A 43-year-old Highlands man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault following an alleged road rage incident, according to Lehi City Police.

At 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, dispatch was notified of an unconscious man in the street near the 1300 block of West Main Street. Lehi City police arrived and found several people at the scene, “including a man lying unconscious in the street with a bleeding head,” according to an affidavit from the arrested man, John Jeffrey Williams.

A press release from Lehi City Police said the man in the street was 38 years old. The bleeding man was flown by helicopter to a hospital in critical condition, the statement said.

“Officers and detectives obtained video footage and witness statements,” Williams’ affidavit states. “The evidence collected indicated an incident of road rage shortly before an assault between two adult males. An adult male, John Williams, had followed the victim eastbound on Main Street and confronted her near 1300 West.”

A press release from Lehi City Police said the victim apparently cut Williams off and performed a brake check as they drove east together.

“The suspect followed the victim into a neighborhood where both drivers exited their vehicles and a physical altercation occurred,” the LCPD statement said.

“The victim was injured in the brief physical altercation and was flown by rescue helicopter to a nearby hospital in critical condition.”

Williams’ affidavit states that the two exchanged blows before the victim fell to the street. Williams was not injured.

The affidavit described the exchange as an incident of road rage.

“Due to Mr. Williams’ actions in provoking an incident of road rage, confronting the other party and assaulting them in the roadway, causing them to fall to the ground unconscious and in need of immediate medical attention, I have probable cause to charge John Williams with aggravated assault as the victim lost consciousness and sustained serious bodily injury.”

Williams was booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation into the alleged crime, which police are classifying as a second-degree felony.
