Court in Sheppie sentences rapist to life imprisonment

Mhlengi Perfect Ngcobo’s name will be entered into the national sex offenders register.

Ngcobo (35) was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Port Shepstone Regional Court on 20 May and was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

In 2021, he raped a girl (13) twice in Msinsini near Umzumbe.

A family member caught Ngcobo red-handed and immediately reported the incident to the police.

The Saps Communications Office for Ugu District explained that crimes against children are very often not reported because the family is too close, children are unaware of their rights, are afraid of the perpetrator, the outcome of the case (removal of the breadwinner or children), or they are afraid of guilt or shame.

Parents, educators and teachers need to be alert to certain signs that may indicate that a child may be a victim of abuse. These signs include a change in behavior or physical appearance, relationship problems with friends, unusual interest in sex, unusual sensitivity and a lot of crying or withdrawal of the child from all activities.

Contact the police if you know of a child who may be being abused.

The Saps are committed to policing crimes against women and children, and work with the Ministry of Justice to ensure that perpetrators receive the maximum punishment.
