Suspect arrested for car theft

CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) – A San Jacinto, California man was arrested in Calexico after he stole a car and attempted to flee to Mexico, according to police.

According to Calexico police, it all started when the owner of a truck left it running at a gas station.

According to police, the suspect then jumped into the truck and drove away.

Officials said hours later they received reports of the same truck heading south toward Mexicali.

“Thanks to our efforts, we were able to contact U.S. Customs and assist in locating the vehicle. It was traveling back north to the United States and was stopped and detained at the border,” said Officer Alexander Hernandez of the Calexico Police Department.

Calexico police said the suspect realized he was being followed and decided to turn around and return to the United States.
