Student guilty of racist attack

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kansas — A Shawnee Mission East student pleaded guilty Wednesday for his involvement in a racist and physical attack on a black student.

You may remember Attack was captured on videoThe teenager pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm.

This confession came more than six months after he broke Brey’anna Brown’s nose for repeatedly using the “N-word.”

“Every action has consequences. We teach that to all of our children, and they have to teach that to him. Now he’s learning it, but he’s learning it the hard way,” said Linyka Brown, Brey’anna’s mother.

In a report you’ll only see on FOX4, the victim and her mother shared their reaction to this sentencing.

“I was very happy to hear that he finally admitted that his behavior was wrong,” Brey’anna said.

The video was seen by tens of thousands of people who Video also led to school protestsand now the conviction of this male student.

“It was very stressful for us and I felt like I wasn’t safe anywhere at school, in the hallways, etc.,” Brey’anna said.

So much so that the teen was forced to change schools. FOX4 had previously not named Nicholas Rosaly because he was a minor. But Rosaly has now admitted his guilt and Brey’anna’s mother says they can finally move on.

“I’m just happy about it because I feel like this closes a chapter for Brey’anna. He pleaded guilty and she can move on. We’ve started with her transferring to another school, but this is just a breath of fresh air,” Linyka said.

She has sent a clear message to all school districts about the importance of Combating racist and violent behaviour before the situation escalates:

“If you know there is racism and you have other people there, don’t sweep it under the rug, take it seriously. Because if you don’t, it could happen again or worse. And we send our children to you and you are supposed to protect our children. That’s what you have to do,” Linyka said.

Rosaly will be sentenced on June 20. FOX4 reached out to the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office and the Shawnee Mission School District – both declined comment.
