Officers from the East Alton and Bethalto police departments responded to a firearms call at around 11:31 p.m. when they were shot at as they exited their vehicles. Officers returned fire at 47-year-old Shannon Musgraves of East Alton, who had barricaded himself in his home. Neither officer was injured in the exchange of gunfire.

EAPD requested assistance from the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System Special Response Team, who found Musgraves in the home with a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound. This suspicion was confirmed on May 24, when the Madison County Medical Examiner confirmed the cause of death following an autopsy. Musgraves’ self-inflicted gunshot was the only wound sustained in the incident.

The ISP will share its findings with the Madison County District Attorney’s Office as the investigation progresses. No further information is available at this time, but check back for updates.
