A 17-year-old boy who drove a Porsche into two engineers in Pune is the talk of the town, and new details about the accident are emerging every day. The boy is said to have spent Rs 48,000 in a pub just hours before the accident on May 19.

Here are the latest updates on this case:

  1. The juvenile court is currently hearing whether the 17-year-old can be tried as an adult in this case or not. The Pune police made the application on the grounds that the boy was well aware that drink-driving could have serious consequences.

  2. In the meantime, the boy was remanded in custody until June 5 after the court initially granted him bail on the condition that he write an essay on the subject of “drink-driving.”

  3. According to police, the boy and two of his friends, who were in the luxury car, visited a pub in Pune and spent nearly Rs 48,000 there.

  4. The speeding Porsche crashed into a bicycle in the early hours of Sunday morning, killing two software developers.

  5. The 24-year-old engineers Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta come from Indore in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh and came to Pune with the hope of pursuing a career there.

  6. Following an outcry for a speedy release on bail and the police’s request for review, the JJB on Wednesday remanded the teenager to an observation centre until June 5.

  7. Police have also arrested the teenager’s father in connection with the case.

  8. Shortly after the accident, a rap song circulated on social media claiming that the 17-year-old defendant was the perpetrator. But police and the boy’s mother have said the video in which the singer brags about how he got away with the accident is fake.

  9. “The video circulating does not show my son. This is a fake video. My son is in the detention camp,” the teenager’s mother says in her message.

  10. Police are also investigating possible breaches of protocol in the hours after the incident, including possible preferential treatment given to the son of a prominent city builder. The allegations include downplaying the cruelty of the incident in initial reports and delaying a medical examination that should have been conducted immediately to determine the boy’s blood alcohol level.
