Is Houston ISD closed? District says all students must return to class Thursday, only 2 campuses failed to open

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — All Houston ISD students returned to class Thursday, with only two campuses closed following a deadly storm that hit exactly a week ago, the district told ABC13 in an update.

According to HISD, “crews were able to power up and cool additional campuses at 6 p.m. last night (Wednesday). As a result, only Field ES and Benbrook ES were unable to welcome students today. Field students are served at Travis and Love Elementary Schools. Benbrook students are served in a designated area in Clifton MS. Sinclair ES welcomes students from the main building. Students typically served in temporary buildings in Sinclair are served in Oak Forest ES.

HISD sent an email Wednesday afternoon, saying classes would be held Thursday for all students, even though at the time, more than a dozen schools still did not have power.

Power had since returned to Sinclair and Field elementary schools, but it was unclear if power had returned to all schools.

The email sent asked parents to drop off their students as usual. The district said it would then transport students to another school that has electricity.

However, the email at the time was vague and did not tell parents which schools it would be.

Parent Jamie Boehm found out Wednesday night that the power had come back on at the school her 5-year-old son attends, but says she sympathizes with parents who may not know which campus their child will end up on during the daytime.

“You want to know much further in advance than late at night where your child will be, who will look after him, will he have his classmates with him?” Boehm told ABC13.

“It’s a safety issue,” she continued. “You didn’t ask students to sign permits to get on these buses. Parents don’t know where their students are going.”

ABC13 reached out to HISD again to see if the district would provide information informing parents if their child would not be attending school at their usual location.
