A man faces life in prison after shooting at police in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. – Sacramento County District Attorney officials said Ismael Herrera Mondello was convicted of attempted murder of a peace officer following a chase involving a stolen vehicle.

Sacramento Police spotted a vehicle reported stolen on July 7, 2021 and attempted a traffic stop. At that point, the driver reportedly took off and drove recklessly through a residential area near 65th Street and Fruitridge Road.

Modello shot repeatedly at the officers, hitting a nearby home before running away and forcing his way into another home, district attorney officials said. The homeowner ran out the front door to safety.

SWAT officers used tear gas at the home until Mondello left.

He is currently facing a maximum sentence of life in prison and sentencing is scheduled for June 28th.
