Houston Texans’ DeMeco Ryans explains his intention during OTAs

The Houston Texans are building something special. They went from a 3-13 record two seasons ago to 10-7 in 2023 – a jump of seven wins. What changed? They hired DeMeco Ryans as head coach and brought in rookie quarterback CJ Stroud, who became a star.

Ryans has already proven himself to be the right man for the job, and he did it with just one offseason and one year of work. It’s hard to argue with Ryans process and ability to attract players and build a winning culture in a short period of time. For Ryans and the Texans coaching staff, it starts at the start of OTAs.

On Tuesday, Ryans explained his process and what he looks for from the early days of OTAs.

“For us, it’s about our guys really understanding the day-to-day installations that we do. We want our guys to have a head start before we get to training camp, so it’s basically an overview camp,” Ryans said.

Ryans is looking at a huge opportunity. After an excellent impression in the first year, the Texans front office took winning steps. Bringing in these veterans and strong talents and establishing a similar culture can start from day one of OTAs.

“We’re giving our guys a daily setup, seeing how much the players can figure out, how much they can handle, researching and retaining information from the classroom to the field, and we’re just seeing who can go out and execute the things we have I’ve been preaching for the last two weeks in phases one and two,” Ryans continued. “Can guys go out and execute effectively? That’s what we’re looking for and seeing how much guys can really handle.”

Overall, it’s preparation for training camp. Players will return to Houston for training camp knowing what to expect and will be able to get to work right away. Given the process the Texans coaching staff has applied, it’s hard to imagine this team is off to a slow start to the 2024 NFL season. The team will be ready and there are now real expectations behind the team.
