Houston police officer arrested: Adan Lopez faces charges of obstructing public functions after crash in Montgomery County, officials say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — An off-duty Houston police officer is accused of interfering with an investigation into a suspected drunken driving after the vehicle he was riding in rolled over, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to deputies, Adan Lopez was not wearing a seatbelt during the single-vehicle crash around 2 a.m. May 18 in the 22000 block of FM-1314 in the Porter area.

MCSO said Lopez was the passenger in a vehicle driven by Norma Miranda Estrada, who was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.

Officials said Lopez, identified as an off-duty officer with the Houston Police Department, refused to follow their orders and continually interfered with the investigation as Estrada underwent a field sobriety test.

Lopez was arrested and charged with obstruction of public functions and unlawful possession of a weapon. However, the sheriff’s office did not release details on the latter charge. Lopez was taken to a hospital for treatment before being arrested.

Estrada was charged with drunk driving. Both were being held in the Montgomery County Jail.

HPD confirmed Lopez’s arrest and added that it has suspended him from duty pending an internal investigation.

Lopez was sworn in as an officer in March 2017 and assigned to the North Belt Patrol Division, police added.

“HPD holds our officers to the highest standards and will take action up to and including dismissal,” it said in a statement.
