Police shoot knife-wielding suspect in incident in Reynier Village

Suspect killed after confrontation with LAPD during burglary operation

Early Monday morning, a suspect was shot and killed by police in an incident in the 2600 block of S. Halm Ave, near Beverlywood Street in Reynier Village. Officers responded to a burglary alarm around 3:20 a.m. and arrested several possible suspects in a vehicle near the residence. When they arrived, they noticed smoke coming from the home and immediately requested the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD).

LAFD officers entered the home and encountered a man armed with a knife. They immediately evacuated the property and the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) established a perimeter around the home. LAPD SWAT was called to the scene to bring the situation under control.

At approximately 7:05 a.m., the suspect exited the home, still armed with a knife. A police-involved shooting (OIS) occurred and the suspect was struck by gunfire. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported during the incident.

LAPD Detective Meghan Aguilar was quoted by ABC 7 Eyewitness News as saying, “Until investigators view the officer’s body-worn (camera) that was on during the incident, I hesitate to speak to what exactly the suspect was doing with the knife. What we do know is that he was armed with it at the time of the officer-involved shooting.”

Neighbors told ABC 7 News they saw the woman who lives in the house run out and a neighbor sprayed the man with water after he ran out without clothes. A neighbor said he believes the man was trying to break into his home but was unable to break in.
