LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana (KPLC) – Similar to Thursday, there was widespread rain on Friday, but the amount of precipitation was much less.

Rain chances will be well above normal throughout the weekend as a low pressure system remains aloft in our area. This will provide additional lift, allowing clouds and rain to form more easily.

There will be plenty of rain, although precipitation amounts don’t appear to be getting out of control. On average, another 1 to 2 inches of rain could fall through Sunday. It’s also important to note that there will likely be breaks between areas of rain. Keep an umbrella handy throughout the weekend and keep an eye on the radar with our First Alert Weather app.

The low pressure system will move out of our area by Sunday, meaning we should return to more “normal summer weather” early next week. There will still be isolated showers and thunderstorms, but these will be more confined to the afternoon hours.

There are signs that high pressure systems aloft could dictate our weather over the next week. If that happens, the chance of rain would drop below normal and there might even be no rain at all. However, keep in mind that less rain means higher temperatures, with highs rising above 30 degrees again.

The tropics are showing signs of waking up, and an area of unsettled weather is emerging over the central Atlantic with a low probability of formation. This system may attempt to organize once it reaches the Lesser Antilles early to mid-next week. At this time, this poses NO threat to SWLA, as it is thousands of miles away; however, it is a sign that we are still in hurricane season.
