Family: Three-year-old boy Covil Allen is unlikely to survive after brutal attack by pit bull couple

A 3-year-old boy who was brutally attacked by two pit bull mixes in Minnesota last week is not expected to survive his injuries, his heartbroken family said.

The tragedy occurred when the boy, Covil Allen, and his mother, Natasha Palacios Vega, visited a home in Brooklyn Park on July 19 where the two dogs were for sale, police said.

Suddenly one of the dogs attacked Covil – and the second dog joined in and bit the boy and Vega.

Desperate passers-by resorted to any weapon they could find to fight the animals.

“Adults were in the area and began defending the three-year-old by using hammers and pickaxes to lure the dogs away from the three-year-old,” an affidavit obtained by the Star Tribune states.

First responders rushed to the house and took Covil to hospital with serious injuries, police said.

Since the attack, Covil’s parents, Vega and father Charles Allen, have been preparing their son for organ donation, according to a tragic update to an online fundraising campaign.

“This will honor Covil’s life and save the lives of other children in the hope that no other parent will have to endure the pain they are experiencing,” the update said.

Vegas has now undergone two surgeries and, according to friends and family, will require further surgery and a skin graft to help her recover.

The two dogs, Blue and Nisi, belonged to the “XL variant” of American Bullys – a mixed breed of American bulldogs and pit bulls that is “banned in Great Britain,” said police inspector Elliot Faust.

Covil’s mother, Natasha Palacios Vega, was also seriously injured. GoFundMe

Faust noted that dog attacks are “a problem in our community,” he said.

“We had more potentially dangerous dogs this year than last year,” he added.

Charges are still pending. Investigators are gathering evidence to submit to prosecutors for review “in the near future.”

This is the second dog attack this week in Brooklyn Park, about 12 miles north of Minneapolis.

On Tuesday, a seven-year-old girl was attacked but fortunately suffered only superficial injuries, according to the Star Tribune.

Police shot the dog while it was chasing another boy.
