LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Las Vegas police released video from a body cam worn by an officer following his death in custody on Tuesday.

According to police, it happened shortly after 8:30 a.m. on July 16 in the 4700 block of West Charleston Boulevard near Decatur Boulevard.

Officers driving near the crime scene noticed a fight between three men in the parking lot. It was later determined that it was a robbery between the men.

Police spoke to one of the men, who told officers the suspect, later identified as 56-year-old Michael Turner, attacked him, took items from him and pointed at Turner as he got into a white vehicle nearby.

The officer then spotted the white vehicle while Turner was attempting to leave the parking lot. According to police, Turner slowly drove away from the officer in the parking lot. The officer followed and observed the vehicle go high in a median. Turner’s vehicle backed up and his vehicle and the patrol vehicle collided. Turner then drove a short distance away from the patrol vehicle and stopped, police said.

The officer verbally ordered Turner to exit the vehicle. He crawled out of the vehicle and immediately laid on the ground. Another officer arrived and Turner was arrested and handcuffed. A doctor was then called, according to police.

While waiting for a medical team to arrive, Turner sat up and asked for water to be poured on him, then rolled back to the ground a few minutes later, police said.

At one point, a third officer arrived at the scene of the arrest and began monitoring Turner. After several more minutes, a supervisor arrived and noticed that Turner seemed unresponsive. He ordered the officer to remove the handcuffs and administer Narcan. The Narcan did not appear to be working, and officers began CPR on Turner when a medical team arrived.

Nearly 50 grams of meth were found in Turner’s vehicle, and another 29 grams of meth were found on Turner’s body at the hospital, police said.

A medical team took Turner to UMC, where he was later pronounced dead.
The cause and manner of death will be released by the Clark County Coroner’s Office.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the LVMPD’s Critical Incident Review Team.
