A church group from Atlanta visited the city of Selma a week after the July 4 holiday.

About 50 members of Shiloh Mass Baptist Church visited the Queen City and crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge on a day trip. Several members of the congregation who made the three-hour trip were in their 70s and had always wanted to visit Selma.

“We came to Selma for our history and to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Bloody Sunday in 1965,” King said. “Our children need to know the sacrifice our ancestors made on Bloody Sunday.”

Weems said she was grateful the church visited Selma, known for hosting the annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee during the first weekend in March.

“We’re glad we got to experience Selma and the Edmund Pettus Bridge,” Weems said.

Sims said it was important to visit Selma and see a historic city overcoming racial injustice, led by Martin Luther King Jr. and John Lewis, which culminated in the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
