Donald Trump recalls the attack on a rally in his latest interview

Washington:

Former US President Donald Trump told the New York Post on Sunday that he “should have been dead” after surviving an assassination attempt that he described as a “very surreal experience”.

“I shouldn’t be here. I should be dead,” Trump told the Washington Post in an interview aboard his plane en route to Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention, where he is expected to be confirmed as the party’s presidential nominee.

It was a “very surreal experience,” he reported with a white bandage over his right ear, the newspaper said.

Trump, 78, was shot in the ear by a gunman at a campaign rally on Saturday. His face was covered in blood, a bystander was killed and two other people were injured.

Trump told the Washington Post that he would be dead if he hadn’t tilted his head slightly to the right during his speech at the rally to read a chart on the subject of illegal immigrants.

“By luck or by God. Many people say I’m still here because of God,” he said.

He praised Secret Service agents for killing the gunman. “They took him out with a shot right between the eyes,” he said. “They did a fantastic job,” he added. “It’s surreal for all of us.”

The image of Trump raising his fist in defiance as Secret Service agents led him away made headlines around the world and went viral on social media.

“A lot of people say it’s the most iconic photograph they’ve ever seen,” the former president told the Washington Post, adding, “They’re right, and I didn’t die. Usually you have to die to have an iconic image.”

Trump said he rewrote the speech he had prepared for the Republican National Convention after the assassination attempt on his life.

He said he had “prepared an extremely tough speech” and talked about Biden’s “terrible administration. But I threw it away” in favor of a speech that he hoped would “unite our country.”

“But I don’t know if that’s possible. People are very divided.”
