Record number of tornado warnings issued in New York

Yesterday was a very active weather day in Western New York and that led to a new record for tornado warnings issued by the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo issued 18 different tornado warnings for different parts of the state yesterday as Beryl moved through the region.

Of the 18 warnings issued by the National Weather Service in Buffalo, eight were for western New York.

There were also two confirmed tornadoes that touched down in western New York state.

An EF-0 tornado was confirmed in Eden yesterday with winds of 85 miles per hour.

An EF01 tornado was confirmed in Arkwright with winds of 110 miles per hour.

The previous record for tornado warnings issued in a 24-hour period by the National Weather Service in Buffalo was seven, on June 2, 1998.

Here’s a look at the deadliest tornadoes to touch down in New York state history.

5 – 3 September 1993 – 2 people killed – An EF1 tornado touched down in a cornfield in Batavia and moved northeast. As the tornado crossed Route 5, it lifted a delivery van into the air and slammed it into an oncoming tractor-trailer. Both drivers were killed instantly.

October 4 – 14, 1989 – 2 people killed – An EF2 tornado moved through McDonough for about 2 miles. The tornado was about 300 feet long and injured three people while killing two others.

3 – 2 May 1982 – 2 people killed – An EF3 tornado tore through Sherman, New York, about 28 miles (45 kilometers) across. The tornado was 450 feet (137 meters) wide and killed two people.

July 2 – 8, 2014 – 4 people were killed – An EF2 tornado hit Smithfield just 2 miles northeast of Peterboro. This tornado traveled 2.5 miles and killed 4 people in Smithfield. Three homes were destroyed and 5 others sustained significant damage.

1 – 16 November 1989 – 9 people were killed – An EF1 tornado touched down near Monroe New York, and traveled 9 miles, killing 9 people on the ground. 18 people were also injured and this tornado caused nearly $25 million in damage.

Tornadoes are not a common occurrence in New York State. Tornadoes do occur, however. Here’s a look at some of the strongest storms:

On July 8, 2021, a a tornado has touched down The tornado ripped through Woods Valley Ski Resort and then turned northeast into downtown Westernville. The tornado caused extensive damage along Main Street. Roofs were torn off homes, trees were uprooted, power lines were downed, and residents were without power for days. Fortunately, there were no fatalities. Here are exclusive photos that show the frightening force of the storm.
