Audi A5 Coupé and Cabriolet

The S5 and RS5 models with two doors will also be discontinued.

Hurray for the A5 Coupe and Cabriolet. The two-door models have disappeared from the US lineup, including their hotter siblings, the S5 and RS5. For the 2025 model year, Audi will only sell the more practical five-door A5 Sportback and its performance versions. The German luxury brand is streamlining its portfolio by removing its competitor, the BMW 4 Series Coupe/Cabriolet, from the lineup.

Normally, we would say that the decision to retire old cars is due to the fact that the next generation is just around the corner. However, we have not yet seen any spy photos of the new A5 two-door. It is unclear whether Audi will launch another coupe and/or a convertible. So far, there have only been spy photos of prototypes showing the A5 Sportback and A5 Avant.

Yes, you read that right – the outgoing A4 Avant will be replaced by an A5 station wagon. This is part of the German luxury brand’s decision to give cars with combustion engines odd numbers in their names, while electric vehicles will all have even numbers. For this reason, the combustion-engined A6 will become the A7, leaving room in the lineup for an electric A6 E-Tron.

The reason why the future looks bleak for the A5 Coupé and A5 Cabriolet is that two-door cars are slow sellers. We should not forget that Audi has already stopped production of the TT and the R8. Admittedly, these were niche models. The A3 Cabriolet has not been in the range for many years.

Arch-rival Mercedes has merged the C-Class Coupé/Cabrio and the E-Class Coupé/Cabrio to form the CLE Coupé/Cabrio. In addition, the star has discontinued the SLC, the S-Class Coupé/Cabrio and the AMG GT Cabriolet.

In Munich, BMW will apparently not be giving the two-door 4 Series models a new generation, at least not with a combustion engine. The Z4 and 8 Series are also said to be living on borrowed time. Since crossovers and SUVs are still the big sellers, it is no wonder that coupes and convertibles are gradually being phased out.

Looking at sales figures, the A5 is actually up five percent in the US through June. Deliveries rose to 12,826 units, but that number includes the Sportback. Unfortunately, Audi doesn’t break down sales by the three body styles. The five-door model probably did all the work.

Audi has confirmed that the all-new A5 will debut this year as a Sportback. Whether there will be a successor to the A4 sedan remains to be seen, as car paparazzi have not yet seen any prototypes with trunk lids. It could mean that the A5 Sportback will replace the A4 sedan, but nothing is official. It’s hard to believe that the folks from Ingolstadt won’t have a direct competitor for the Mercedes C-Class and BMW 3 Series.

The updated A5 will be based on Audi’s Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), which is effectively an evolution of the current MLB architecture. It will be equipped with the latest and probably last petrol and diesel engines developed by the German luxury brand. Unless there is a change of plans, Audi still wants to go completely electric by 2033.

The A4 name will return later this decade for an E-Tron electric sedan to compete with the upcoming Mercedes EQC and BMW i3 sedans.
