Hezbollah launches drone attack on Mount Hermon in the Golan Heights

The Iran-backed terrorist group Hezbollah said on Sunday it had launched a drone attack on Mount Hermon in Israel’s Golan Heights, home to a key surveillance center.

It was the first such bombing since the start of the firefight with Israel on October 8, one day after the Palestinian ally, the terrorist organization Hamas, attacked southern Israel and thus triggered the Gaza war. Hezbollah announced that it would not cease its operations until the war was over.

Although the attack had repeatedly hit other areas in the Golan Heights, Lebanon’s Hezbollah claimed it was the first time the military target on the highest elevation in Israeli-controlled territory had been hit.

Israel has important surveillance, espionage and air defense facilities on Mount Hermon overlooking the Syrian capital. Syria, Iraq, Jordan and parts of Saudi Arabia have been monitored from there since the Yom Kippur War in 1973.

The conflict between the two has intensified

The conflict between Iran-backed Hezbollah and Israel has been escalating for months, raising fears of a full-scale war. Both sides say they want to avoid this, and diplomats are working to prevent it.

According to sources familiar with Hezbollah’s arsenal, Hezbollah has stepped up its attacks, deploying a greater number of explosive drones, using a new type of missile and saying it had attacked Israeli warplanes for the first time.

The escalation has tested unwritten rules that have largely confined the conflict since October to areas on or near the border, keeping Lebanese and Israeli cities out of the firing line.

Israel blames Iran-backed Hezbollah for the increase in violence and has reiterated its pledge to restore security along the border. The Israel Defense Forces did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the latest Hezbollah attack.
