Atlanta’s Ben Shelton falls to world No. 1 in Wimbledon fourth round – WSB-TV Channel 2

LONDON, England — Atlanta native Ben Shelton, ranked No. 14 in the world, had his best performance yet at Wimbledon, but his run has come to an end.

Ben Shelton, 21, lost to world number one Jannik Sinner of Italy on Sunday morning, but he held on.

He lost in three sets (6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (11-9)), but the last set ended in a thrilling tie-break.

This is Ben Shelton’s second decisive set in this tournament. In his second round match against South African Lloyd Harris, he won in a tie-break 10-7 in the fifth set.

By reaching the fourth round, which reduced the field from 16 to eight players, he equalled his father’s best performance at Wimbledon thirty years ago.

Bryan Shelton is a former men’s tennis player and head coach of the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team. Bryan Shelton was an All-American at Georgia Tech in the 1980s and is a member of the Yellow Jackets Hall of Fame.

The elder Shelton also coached the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team to a national championship in 2007. He left in 2012 to become the head coach of the University of Florida men’s team.

After his father was hired by Florida, the Shelton family moved from Atlanta to Gainesville.

Atlanta-born Ben Shelton made a splash at the US Open last year, becoming the youngest American to reach the US Open semi-finals since 1992.
