Man arrested for rape and murder of 9-year-old girl

Thane: Police in Maharashtra’s Thane district have arrested a man who allegedly raped and killed a nine-year-old girl, an official said on Friday.

Abhay Yadav (42) of Govind Nagar under the jurisdiction of Shanti Nagar police station in Bhiwandi district allegedly kidnapped, raped and strangled the child on Thursday afternoon, he said.

After passersby noticed the body of a child, police launched an investigation and arrested Yadav within hours, the official told PTI.

Shanti Nagar police also arrested a man on Thursday for allegedly killing his wife and throwing the body into a well in Bhawdhad village.

Kanchan Das (36) strangled his wife Laxmi Das (28) with a scarf on Wednesday. He then told her family that she had eloped with someone. But an investigation pointed to his involvement in the incident, which led to his arrest.

A senior Bhiwandi police officer told PTI that the accused in both the cases have been charged under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which came into force on Monday and replaces the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
