Birmingham police investigate murder after July 4 shooting

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WBRC) – A murder investigation is underway in Birmingham Thursday afternoon.

Birmingham police said they were called to the 2500 block of 7th Avenue North around 2:15 p.m. on July 4 for a report of a person being shot.

When they arrived at the scene, they found a gray Chrysler 300 that had crashed into a utility pole and a tree. Police say no one was inside the vehicle and that the victim was able to run away before collapsing on the ground.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said they found a man on the ground with gunshot wounds.

Birmingham Fire and Emergency Services arrived on scene and transported the victim to UAB Hospital, where he died.

The BPD believes a shooting occurred at the intersection of 25th Street North and 7th Avenue North. They say it was likely a targeted shooting and that weapons of various calibers were fired. Officer Fitzgerald says there were at least 50 pieces of evidence.

No one else was injured in the shooting.

The police have not arrested anyone at this time, but are following a lead.
