Which Kohl's locations in Delaware will get Babies R Us stores?

A good baby business will not be defeated.

A year after Delaware infant wholesaler buybuy Baby rose from the dead, another baby brand is making a comeback after closing all of its stores.

Babies R Us, which closed all of its stores in 2018 along with parent brand Toys R Us, will reopen three more in Delaware this year, along with hundreds of other stores across the country.

But instead of opening as standalone stores, most of these Babies R Us locations will reopen in about 200 Kohl’s department stores. The department store announced a partnership with WHP Global, the parent company of Babies R Us, in March. The first Babies R Us in Delaware could open as early as the end of this month.

When did Babies R Us close and why is it now in Kohl’s stores?

It wasn’t long ago that in May 2018, customers crowded outside Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores in Christiana, waiting for deep discounts as the company went bankrupt and liquidated. As of last year, the former giant Toys R Us supermarket is now a Vietnamese supermarket called Hung Vuong with stores in Philadelphia.

But Toys R Us didn’t disappear. Owners WHP Global planned a return by opening Toys R Us departments in over 400 Macy’s department stores across the country. This collaboration was intended to strengthen both brands. Toys R Us locations in Delaware include the Macy’s stores in Christiana and Concord Mall.

In 2024, WHP announced that it would also open up to two dozen stand-alone Toys R Us flagship stores across the country, as well as at airports and cruise ships, following in the footsteps of a flagship store at the American Dream Mall in New Jersey in 2022.

The revival of Babies R Us appears to be following the same pattern. About 200 Kohl’s stores will snap up Babies R Us departments.

Kohl’s has seen its stock fall sharply this year, and first-quarter profits were low. But Kohl’s spokespeople said earlier this year they hoped the well-known Babies R Us brand “will bring more new customers to Kohl’s, including younger customers who will be choosing Kohl’s for the first time.”

Kohl’s struck a similar deal with beauty retailer Sephora a few years ago. That partnership turned into a bright spot for the department store, which earned $1.4 billion last year from what Kohl’s described as a “younger and more diverse customer base.”

Where and when will Babies R Us open in Delaware in 2024?

Babies R Us will open this year in the following Kohl’s stores in Delaware:

Babies R Us has planned to open most of its stores by fall 2024, but development has been rapid so far. Employees at the Kohl’s store on Kirkwood Highway in Delaware said Babies R Us is currently under construction and could open in August.

Online shoppers can now purchase the Babies R Us range, which includes high chairs, strollers, cribs, toys, high chairs and a host of other baby items, on the Kohl’s website.
