CARBONDALE, IL — Carbondale Police report that 18-year-old Justin N. Perteet-Lovelady of Murphysboro was arrested as a suspect in a shooting on Saturday, June 29. The investigation is ongoing.

Police received a report of shots fired in the area of ​​West Main Street and North Springer Street at approximately 11:28 a.m. on June 21.

Investigating detectives identified Perteet-Lovelady as the suspect who fired the weapon.

The police department said detectives, with assistance from the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office, obtained an arrest warrant for Perteet-Lovelady on charges of willful discharge of a firearm and willful unlawful discharge of a weapon.

Over a week later, on Saturday, June 29, at approximately 1:44 a.m., CPD officers spotted Perteet-Lovelady in the 600 block of East Grand Avenue.

Officers arrested Perteet-Lovelady as he attempted to flee from them while concealing a loaded handgun. Police said Perteet-Lovelady was arrested without further incident and recovered the handgun.

Officers also found that Perteet-Lovelady was in possession of a controlled substance.

Justin N. Perteet-Lovelady was taken into custody at the Jackson County Jail and faces several charges, including:

  • Heavy discharge of a firearm
  • Serious unlawful use of a firearm
  • Serious illegal use of weapons
  • Armed violence
  • Possession of a controlled substance
  • Resistance against a police officer

Carbondale police say the investigation is ongoing.
