Bengal flogging incident: Accused play ‘JCB’ and hold mock trials, say locals | Kolkata News

Based on the video of the June 28 incident, police registered a case and arrested Tajimul from Dighalgaon village in Lakhipur gram panchayat of Uttar Dinajur district.

According to local political leaders of opposition parties, the accused is a Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporter and allegedly organizes mock trials in all kinds of disputes, from property to extramarital affairs. Besides physical attacks, he also imposes fines, they say.

“He is a TMC worker and is close to the local MP. He is called JCB because he destroyed his opposition…such is his terror among the common people…his path of justice came to light this time through the video. Other such court hearings he had held were not reported,” said Surajit Sen, BJP vice president of Uttar Dinajpur district. “People are too scared to go to the police, so they approach him. He sorts out some problems himself. The victim and her families (in the present incident) are too scared to file a police complaint,” said Sen.

“From controlling votes in elections to local judiciary, Tajimul has done everything. Apart from extorting money from local businessmen. The entire Lakkhipur panchayat area is under the control of him and his team. Since he enjoys political support, he continues to rule the area,” said Anarul Haq, district president of the CPM.

Trinamool MP Chopra Hamidul Islam said, “The police have taken action and we have condemned the incident. Everyone in Chopra is a TMC supporter. But this man does not hold any position (in the TMC).”

“Police have promptly identified and arrested a person who publicly assaulted a woman,” said a West Bengal Police post on X. Islampur SP Joby Thomas K said, “The accused has been booked under relevant sections (assault) and will be produced before the court tomorrow.”
