West Haven police officer attacked by driver on Saturday

WEST HAVEN, Connecticut – A West Haven police officer was attacked Saturday afternoon, according to a West Haven police news release.

According to police, a West Haven police officer was driving his marked patrol car in the area of ​​Meloy Road and Route 1 at around 1:58 p.m. when a vehicle pulled up next to him and attempted to run him off the road.

The officer reported the encounter to dispatch and said the person attempted to hit his police car, police said. The officer continued south on Meloy Road and then on Saw Mill Road back to the police station, providing updates over the radio.

Police said additional units began assisting the officer and that a marked patrol car was stopped at the red light on Greta Street at Saw Mill Road.

“The driver of the suspect vehicle then turned sharply to the left and intentionally crashed into a stationary and occupied police vehicle,” the press release said.

According to the police, several emergency services then went to the scene of the accident and were able to arrest the suspect. The authority’s criminal investigation department has taken over the investigation, which is being considered a “deliberate attack on our police officers,” the press release said.

According to police, further information will be released as the investigation progresses.
