The tragic accident in which “Star Trek” actor Anton Yelchin died

It’s been almost a decade since the Star Trek and Green Room star tragically passed away.

Star Trek Actor Anton Yelchin died tragically in 2016 after a freak accident right outside his home. It was a shocking loss, coming shortly after his breakout role for Yelchin in Green space and the third entry in the restart Star Trek film series, the latter of which was released posthumously.

Nearly a decade has passed since his death, and the accident that caused it raises many questions and paints a picture of his final moments. Yelchin had just gotten out of his Jeep Grand Cherokee in his driveway and was about to get his mail at the gate. The vehicle then slid back and crushed him into a brick pillar next to the gate, killing him. His cause of death was “blunt traumatic asphyxia,” according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

“The victim was on his way to a rehearsal with his friends and when he didn’t show up, his friends went to his house where they found him dead next to his car,” Jennifer Houser of the LAPD told CNN at the time. “It appears he briefly exited his car and left it in the driveway. He was behind the vehicle when it rolled backwards and pinned him against the brick pillar, causing the trauma that led to his death.”

Tributes and commemorations for the actor quickly poured in, with the creatives behind Star Trek: Beyond – Journey into the Past He pays tribute to Yelchin and refuses to reprise his role as Pavel Chekov in future films.

His death also led to a lawsuit filed by his family against the makers of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles was aware of a problem with its 2014 and 2015 models that resulted in rollover incidents similar to the one that took Yelchin’s life. Tragically, software updates did not reach the dealership until the week Yelchin died, even though the company recalled the vehicles in April 2016.

Yelchin’s family and the automaker reached a confidential settlement out of court in March 2018 that sealed the loss and allowed them to move forward. After his death, a bronze statue of Yelchin was erected at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, while the Star Trek family continued to pay tribute to Yelchin until the final season of Picard on Paramount+.
