Roberto Baggio was hospitalized after being attacked by thugs while watching the Euro 2024 match

Baggio spent his entire career in Italy, playing for the country’s three most successful clubs: Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan. He joined Juve in 1990 and won the Serie A title and the Coppa Italia double in his final season with the club.

After five years in Turin, he moved to AC and immediately won the Scudetto again. At Juve, he won the Ballon d’Or after helping the club win the UEFA Cup, scoring two goals in the first leg of the final against Borrusia Dortmund.

His success at club level was never quite replicated at international level, although he did become the first Italian to score at three different World Cups. Baggio led the Azzurri to the final of the 1994 World Cup, where they faced Brazil.

After extra time, the match was still goalless, so it went to penalties. With the score at 3-2 after nine penalties, Baggio fired his penalty over the bar to give Brazil the win.

After retiring, he became president of the technical sector of the Italian Football Federation in 2010. However, he resigned three years later after claiming that the federation had ignored his ideas to focus on young talent.

In Germany, Italy lost narrowly to Spain, although the result could have been much higher. La Roja dominated in Gelsenkirchen, but only needed an own goal from Riccardo Calafiori to secure the three points.

They have now secured their place in the round of 16, while Italy must avoid defeat against Croatia to also secure their place in the knockout stages. Italy struggled to beat Spain and had goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to thank for several impressive saves.
