Woman found dead at Northfield Court in northeast Richland County

COLUMBIA, SC — Richland County officials announced that a woman was found dead in a home in northeast Richland County and a man is charged with murder.

The incident occurred on Wednesday at a house on Northfield Court, off Longtown Road.

Officers said they received a call to the home just before 11 a.m. to check on the welfare of the residents. When they arrived on scene, they found the person who reported the call and then looked inside the home. They said they saw a woman lying on the floor of the home unresponsive. Officers then forced entry into the home and found the woman, who they said had sustained significant head injuries.

Emergency services arrived and pronounced her dead at the scene. Investigators said late Wednesday they had not yet identified the victim or determined how she died.

Officials have identified a man as a suspect but have not yet released his name. He is currently being held in what officials described as a locked facility, but they said if he is released, he will be taken into custody and charged with murder. Officials said there is no danger to the public.

News19 spoke to neighbors who did not want to be interviewed but said they had not heard anything. They added that it is a very quiet community and this kind of thing does not happen here.
