STILLMAN VALLEY, Ill. (WTVO) – David Mecklenburg, executive vice president of Stillman Bank, was killed last week when he fell from a mountain while hiking in Colorado.

According to published reports, the 56-year-old Mecklenburg was a member of a Hiking group on the St. Mary’s Glacier near Idaho Springs.

The Alpine Rescue Team said On Thursday, June 13, the company was notified of a stranded group at 2:20 p.m. and initiated a non-urgent response. While the 25-person rescue team was en route up the mountain, they received information that Mecklenburg had fallen and was unresponsive.

Flight for Life Colorado was subsequently activated, but Mecklenburg was dead by the time the rescue team arrived, authorities said.

“He fell about 300 feet down a steep snow slope that was interspersed with rock bands,” said Jake Smith, a spokesman for the Alpine Rescue Team USA TODAY.

It is unclear what caused his fall.

Clear Creek EMS, Clear Creek Fire Authority, Clear Creek County Sheriff and Jeffcom 911 all assisted in the rescue effort.

“David has been a valued member of the team for the past 30 years and will be greatly missed,” Stillman Bank wrote in a Facebook Tribute.
