Baby found unharmed after car theft in Mott Haven; 53-year-old in custody

A toddler in a minivan stolen in Mott Haven this morning was found safe and sound in Hunts Point, the NYPD said.

According to police, the mother and her six-month-old child were reunited and taken to a hospital for examination.

The stolen gold Chrysler minivan was found at the corner of Oak Point Avenue and Casanova Street. Police had initially said they were looking for a male suspect in his 30s. On Sunday afternoon, they announced that a 53-year-old man was in custody.

Surveillance video from a nearby store shows the moment a man drove away with the van. Minutes later, the child’s mother exited a deli and noticed her van and her baby inside had disappeared.

The child was unharmed. Further information about the 53-year-old suspect was not immediately available.
