In protest against “torture, brutality and unlawful measures” against lawyers, members of the Bar Association suspended court proceedings in the city courts for half a day on Wednesday.

The Karachi Bar Association called for a suspension of all legal work from 11 a.m.

“As per a decision of the Administrative Committee of the Karachi Bar Association dated 12.06.2024, the Bar Association shall not appear for any court hearings after 11:00 am on Wednesday, 12 June 2024 due to misconduct, torture, brutality and unlawful use of arms and batons by the personnel of the law enforcement agencies against the lawyers,” said a letter from the KBA to the District and Sessions Judge (South) requesting that all judicial work be suspended and judicial officers be restrained from passing any adverse orders against any of the parties for non-appearance.

Lawyers were allegedly ill-treated and tortured at the Ministry of Defence police station by operatives of a security organisation after their cars caused an accident near Defence Morr on Korangi Road.

Speaking to The News, KBA Secretary General Ikhtiar Ali Channa said the Bar Association took note of the incident and intervened, following which the matter was settled.

Lawyers staged a sit-in on Korangi Road on Wednesday morning and blocked all traffic. The protest led to severe traffic congestion in the area, causing a strain on office workers and commuters.
