First warning due to exceedance of maximum values in Arizona

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The high pressure system that is bringing us unseasonably warm temperatures is over eastern Arizona. There are signs that it is moving away, but not until Thursday.

As a result, Wednesday will likely be the hottest day of the week nationwide, with some records in jeopardy. As highs ease, temperatures will drop a few degrees on Thursday.

A late-season low pressure system will move across northern Arizona on Friday. To the north, we’ll likely see a few showers and thunderstorms. We’ll also certainly get some clouds, a breeze, and cooler temperatures. In the valley, highs will drop 5-7 degrees. In northern Arizona, temperatures could drop 10 degrees or more.

Unfortunately, the low pressure system will only affect the state for 24 hours. After that, another high pressure system will reappear, bringing temperatures in the deserts to 43-44 degrees Celsius on Saturday and Sunday.

But even this warming will be short-lived, as a persistent low-pressure system from the Pacific Northwest will bring cooler temperatures for most of next week.

While temperatures will still be above normal, we won’t have to worry about extreme heat warnings next week. We’re not quite sure how hot the weekend will be yet.

There have been six heat warnings so far this year. In 2023, Phoenix has had 42 extreme heat warnings. The most of those were 49 in the summer of 2020. Oddly enough, the last year, 2023, was hotter than 2020.
